Christchurch Disaster Recovery of Cultural Materials

This page is established to support Christchurch and Canterbury in the recovery of cultural materials after the Christchurch earthquakes and provide information on the status of institutions and collections with in the area. Please contact the ARANZ Webmaster to advise of further content.

While it seems frustrating to the rest of the country that information is not forthcoming, it is important to understand that heritage institutions, like everyone else in the city, have to ensure buildings are safe and this is a time consuming process. Then the collections can be completely assessed and decisions made where appropriate. From what we can gather, it appears 99% of Christchurch's heritage collections are safe, even if their accommodations are not. The inner CBD is cordoned off. No one is allowed access, except with army escort and only at certain times. Engineers are working around the clock to assess buildings. As institutions are re-opened for staff, more information will be forthcoming. Please bear with us and know that ARANZ Council members are working locally to ensure that support will be there for those who need it, when they need it.
